William E. Hess

William Emil Hess ( born February 13, 1898 in Cincinnati, Ohio; † July 14, 1986 ) was an American politician of the Republican Party. From 1929 to 1937, from 1939 to 1949 and from 1951 to 1961 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 2nd Congressional District of the State of Ohio.

Biography

William Emil Hess was born in Cincinnati. There he attended after attending public schools, the University of Cincinnati. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. In 1919 he was admitted to the bar. In the same year he opened a law firm in Cincinnati. From 1922 to 1926 Hess sat in the city council of Cincinnati.

Hess was first elected in 1928 to the U.S. House of Representatives. There he sat almost continuously until 1961, representing the 2nd District of Ohio, his tenure was interrupted only from 1937 to 1939 and from 1949 to 1951. After his final retirement from Congress in 1961, he returned to his lawyer in Cincinnati. He lived there until his death in 1986. He was buried at the Spring Grove Cemetery.
