Edward R. Roybal

Edward Ross Roybal ( born February 10, 1916 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, † October 24, 2005 in Pasadena, California ) was an American politician. He represented the state of California from 1963 to 1993 in the U.S. House of Representatives as the first Californian " Hispanic " in Congress since 1879th, where he joined mainly for the rights of ethnic minorities in the United States.

Edward Roybal was born in New Mexico in 1922 and moved with his parents to Los Angeles, where he attended the public schools. Graduated from Roosevelt High School in Fresno, he made 1934. On April 1 of the following year he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps at. This was followed by studies at UCLA and Southwestern University. From 1942 to 1944 he worked as a health educator for the California Tuberculosis Association, before he served in the U.S. Army until 1945. After his military service, he served until 1949 as director of health education at the Los Angeles County Tuberculosis and Health Association.

In 1949, then began Roybals political career when he was elected to the City Council of Los Angeles, where he remained until 1962. In July 1961 he was president pro tempore of that body. In addition, he served from 1958 to 1968 as President of the Eastland Savings & Loan Association. During this time he was elected as a deputy in the Congress, where he remained after 14 re- elections until January 3, 1993. On a re-election Roybal renounced in 1992; he was succeeded by his daughter Lucille, the uninterrupted exercise their electoral mandate since then.
