Henry E. Stubbs

Henry Elbert Stubbs ( born March 4, 1881 in Nampa, Coleman County, Texas, † February 28, 1937 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1933 and 1937 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Henry Stubbs attended the public schools in Groesbeck and then studied at the Phillips University in Enid ( Oklahoma). Then he began in 1911 to work as a minister of the Christian Church. From 1911 to 1914 and again from 1918 to 1921 he was pastor in Frederick. In between he practiced this function from 1914 to 1917 in the town of Kingfisher. In 1921 he moved to Tulare, California, where he was also a pastor until 1923. In 1923, he was then pastor at Santa Maria. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1932, Stubbs was selected in the tenth electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Joe Crail on March 4, 1933. After two re- elections he could remain until his death on 28 February 1937 at the Congress. During his time in Congress, most of the New Deal legislation of the Federal Government there were passed under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Following a special election his party colleague Alfred J. Elliott was elected as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives.
