Sala Burton

Sala Galante Burton born Galante ( born April 1, 1925 in Białystok, Poland, † 1 February 1987 in Washington DC) was an American politician. From 1983 to 1987, she represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Sala Burton and her parents arrived in 1939 to San Francisco, as they left after the invasion of German troops at the beginning of World War II Poland. She attended the public schools and then studied at the University of San Francisco. At the same time she began a career in politics as a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1948 and 1950 she was appointed head of the California Public Affairs Institute, 1951 to 1954 she served as Vice President of the California Democratic Council. Finally she led in 1957 to 1959, the Democratic Women's Forum of San Francisco. In the years 1956, 1976, 1980 and 1984 she participated in the respective Democratic National Convention as a delegate.

In the early 1950s she met her future husband and future Congressman Phillip Burton. She was also the sister of John Burton, who was also a congressman for California through their marriage. After the death of her husband in 1983, she was elected as his successor in the U.S. House of Representatives at the required election for the fifth seat from California. After two re- elections she remained until her death on February 1, 1987 in Congress. Its mandate was to Nancy Pelosi.
