Juan Vargas

Juan C. Vargas ( born March 7, 1961 in National City, California) is an American politician. Since 2013 he represents the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Juan Vargas studied until 1983 at the University of San Diego and then to 1987 at Fordham University in New York City. After a subsequent law studies at Harvard University - one of his fellow students was there, the later U.S. President Barack Obama - and his 1991 was admitted to the bar he began to work in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1993 and 2000 he was a member of the City Council of San Diego. Subsequently, he was from 2000 to 2006 deputy in the California State Assembly. Then he sat from 2010 to 2012 in the state Senate. In both chambers of the State Legislature, he was a member of several committees. In between, he worked for a short time as a private businessman. In the years 1992, 1996 and 2006, he unsuccessfully sought the nomination of his party for the respective elections for the U.S. House of Representatives.

In the congressional elections of 2012, Vargas was but then on the 51st electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded Bob Filner took on January 3, 2013, who had been elected interim mayor of San Diego. When choosing Vargas, with 71 percent of the vote; his Republican opponent Michael Crimmins came to 29 percent. He is a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Juan Vargas is married and the father of two daughters. The family lives privately in San Diego.
