Julian C. Dixon

Julian Carey Dixon ( born August 8, 1934 in Washington DC; † December 8, 2000 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician. Between 1979 and 2000 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Julian Dixon attended the public schools in Los Angeles. Between 1957 and 1960 he served in the United States Army. In 1962 he graduated from Los Angeles State College. Then he studied until 1967 at the Southwestern University. Politically, Dixon joined the Democratic Party. From 1972 to 1978 he sat as a deputy in the California State Assembly. During the same period, he participated in all regional party conferences of the Democrats in California. In July 1976 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in New York, on the Jimmy Carter was nominated as a presidential candidate.

In the congressional elections of 1978, Dixon was elected in 28 electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of Yvonne Brathwaite Burke on January 3, 1979. After eleven elections he could remain until his death on 8 December 2000 in Congress. Between 1985 and 1991 he was chairman of the Ethics Committee. In addition, he led from 1983 to 1985 as the successor to Walter E. Fauntroy chairs the Congressional Black Caucus.
