James W. Gazlay

James William Gazlay ( born July 23, 1784 in New York City, New York, † June 8, 1874 in Cincinnati, Ohio ) was an American politician of the Democratic- Republican Party. From 1823 to 1825 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 1st Congressional District of the State of Ohio.

Biography

James William Gazlay was born in New York City. As a young boy he moved in 1789 with his parents in the Dutchess County in New York. After schooling, he studied law at the Adelphi University in Poughkeepsie. In 1809 he was admitted to the bar. He practiced then in Poughkeepsie. In 1813 he moved to Cincinnati, where he was still working as a lawyer.

As a representative of the Democratic-Republican Party, he was from 1823 to 1825 representatives of the 1st district of Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives. He was not re-elected in 1824. 1826 and 1827 he worked for the weekly newspaper Western Tiller. Until his death in 1874, he worked as a lawyer in Cincinnati again. He was buried at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati.

Gazlay was married to Rebecca and father of three children.
