James J. Faran

James John Faran ( born December 29, 1808 in Cincinnati, Ohio, † December 12, 1892 ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party. From 1845 to 1849 he was a member of the House of Representatives of the United States for the 1st Congressional District of the State of Ohio.

Biography

After he was able to complete his law studies at Miami University in 1831, he was admitted to the bar in 1833. Then he took in Cincinnati on a profession. In 1835 he was elected for 4 years in the House of Representatives from Ohio. He chaired the House in 1838 and in 1839 as a speaker. In the State Senate, he sat from 1839 to 1843.

From 1845 to 1849 he was a representative of the 1st district of Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives. After retiring from Congress, he was commissioned in 1854 by Governor William Medill, to supervise the construction of the Ohio Statehouse. Subsequently, he served from 1855 to 1857 as mayor of Cincinnati. In 1860 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore. From 1844 to 1881 he was editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer. He retired to private life and died in 1892 in Cincinnati. He was buried in Spring Grove Cemetery.
