Jonas R. Emrie

Jonas Reece Emrie ( born April 25, 1812 in Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio; † June 5, 1869 in Mound City, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1855 and 1857 he represented the State of Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Jonas Emrie attended preparatory schools. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Hillsboro to work in this profession. Between 1839 and 1848, and again from 1854 to 1856 he was editor and publisher of the newspaper Hillsboro Gazette. He was instrumental in the founding of the Hillsboro Female College. From 1839 to 1841 he was postmaster of his native city. At the same time he proposed as a member of the opposition party a political career. In the years 1847 and 1848 he was a member of the Senate of Ohio. From 1851 to 1854 he served as restructuring judge in Highland County.

In the congressional elections of 1854 Emrie in the sixth electoral district of Ohio was in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he succeeded the Democrat Andrew Ellison on March 4, 1855. Since he has not been confirmed in 1856, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1857. This was marked by the events leading up to the Civil War.

In 1857, Jonas Emrie moved to Mound City, Illinois, where he worked in the trade. He also practiced as a lawyer there again and ran a newspaper. In 1858 he was there also Police Magistrate (Police Magistrate ). Emrie was also treasurer of the local schools and served as master in chancery in Pulaski County. He died on June 5, 1869 in Mound City, where he was also buried.
