John J. Gilligan

John Joyce "Jack" Gilligan ( born March 22, 1921 in Cincinnati, Ohio; † August 26, 2013 ) was an American politician. He was from 1971 to 1975 the 62nd Governor of the state of Ohio.

Early years and political rise

John Joyce Gilligan was founded in 1921 as the eldest son of Harry J. Gilligan ( 1895-1978 ) was born in Cincinnati and his wife Blanche (nee Joyce / 1895-1973 ). Ancestors of the family ( father's side) who immigrated in the mid- 19th century from the Irish County Sligo in the United States, in 1857 settled in Cincinnati, where they founded the company in 1877 Patrick Gilligan & Sons. John ( Joyce ) Gilligan grew up with his four siblings in Cincinnati on - his twin sister Jeanne ( 1921-2002 ) and his two brothers ( also twins) Frank J ( oyce ) ( 1924-2004 ) Harry J ( oyce ) ( 1924 -? ). John Gilligan attended until 1943, the University of Notre Dame and until 1947 the University of Cincinnati. His education was interrupted by the Second World War, in which he took part as a naval officer aboard a destroyer, both in the Atlantic and the Pacific. Gilligan was a member of the Democratic Party. Between 1953 and 1963 he sat on the city council of Cincinnati. Between 1965 and 1966 he was a delegate in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington. Between 1967 and 1968 he was again at the City Council of Cincinnati. In 1968 he made an unsuccessful attempt to be elected to the U.S. Senate. In 1970 he was finally elected as the new governor of his state, where he prevailed with 54.2 percent of the vote against Republican Roger cloud.

Governor of Ohio

John Gilligan took up his new post on January 11, 1971. During this time, a state lottery in Ohio was introduced against his will. John Gilligan was married in first marriage to Mary Catherine Dixon ( 1924-1996 ). The couple had four children - two daughters, Kathleen (married Sebelius ) and Ellen, and two sons, Donald and John. Since 2000, Gilligan was married to his second wife Susan Fremont. His daughter Kathleen Sebelius was 2003-2009 Governor of Kansas and since January 2009 Health Minister in the Cabinet Obama.
