John O'Neill (congressman)

John O'Neill ( born December 17, 1822 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, † May 25 1905 in Zanesville, Ohio ) was an American politician. Between 1863 and 1865 he represented the state of Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John O'Neill attended the public schools in Frederick ( Maryland) and then the Georgetown College in Washington DC Then he graduated from the Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg. After studying law at Georgetown College and his 1842 was admitted as a lawyer, he began in 1844 to work in Zanesville in this profession. In 1845, he served as a prosecutor in the local Muskingum County. He also held several local offices in this district. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1862 O'Neill was elected in the 13th electoral district of Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, where he became the successor of the Republican Samuel T. Worcester on March 4, 1863. Until March 3, 1865, he was able to complete a term in Congress, which was shaped by the events of the Civil War.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John O'Neill practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1883 and 1885 he was a member of the Senate of Ohio. He died on 25 May 1905 in Zanesville, where he was also buried.
