Ron Packard

Ronald C. "Ron" Packard ( born January 19, 1931 in Meridian, Ada County, Idaho ) is a former American politician. Between 1983 and 2001 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Ron Packard attended the public schools of his home, including the Meridian High School, where he graduated in 1948. Between 1948 and 1950 he studied at Brigham Young University in Provo ( Utah). This was followed up in 1953 to study at Portland State University. In the following years until 1957 Packard studied at the University of Portland dentistry. Then he was up in 1959 in the dental service in the U.S. Navy; after that he worked as a private dentist. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. From 1976 to 1978 he was a member of the council of Carlsbad. From 1978 to 1982 he was mayor of this place.

In the congressional elections of 1982 Packard as a "write -in" candidate in the 43rd electoral district of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC was chosen, where he became the successor of Clair Burgener on January 3, 1983. He could not operate directly as the candidate of his party, as had prevailed there in the primaries another candidate. Therefore, he made use of the possibility of the "write- in " process use, its name could be added to the ballot. This method was previously only twice successfully performed at congressional elections: Joe Skeen and Strom Thurmond. After eight re- election as a regular candidate of his party Packard was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 2001 nine legislative sessions. Since 1993, he represented the then newly created 48th district of his state. Packard sat temporarily in the Budget Committee and was among other things an opponent of illegal immigration.

In 2000 Ron Packard gave up another candidacy. Today, he works part time for a company lobbyists in the capital Washington. He and his wife have seven children. Privately, he lived in Carlsbad.
