International Triathlon Union

The International Triathlon Union ( ITU) is organizing the official world championship series duathlon (running - cycling - running), triathlon (swimming - cycling - running), winter triathlon (running, mountain bike cross-country skiing ) and Aquathlon ( run - swim - run).

Organization

The International Triathlon Union was founded on the initiative of the then IOC President Juan Samaranch Antonino, 1989 in Avignon, to give the sport of triathlon in the wake of the increasing popularity of an official framework and thus also to enable its inclusion in the program of the Olympic Games. Eleven years after the founding of the World Association Triathlon 2000 was included in the Olympic Games.

The first president was elected in 1989 in the Great Hall of the Palais des Papes, the Canadian Les McDonald, who was until 21 ITU Congress in Madrid in November 2008 at the office. The current ITU President Marisol Casada is the Spaniard, who ran previously for about 20 years the Spanish Federation.

The objectives and tasks of the ITU are:

  • Organization of races at a high level of organization
  • Promotion of athletes
  • Training projects in developing countries
  • Fight against doping

International Structure

  • The Russian Triathlon Union, responsible for the competition series in Russia.

Triathlon Sprint Distance

The World Championship on the triathlon sprint distance (750 m swim, 20 km bike, 5 km run) was held in Lausanne for the first time in 2010.

In this format, the season three athletes must complete each third - sprint distance:

Mixed teams

The World Cup mixed team was first held in 2009 and is four times over the distances 250 m swim, 6,6 km bike and 1.6 km run.

Triathlon Short Distance

Elite

The ITU organizes since 1989 the World Cup over the short distance or " Olympic triathlon distance". The distances for this ITU races are 1,500 m swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run.

For the first time in 2009 the championship was expanded from a single race to a series of various international competitions. The participants of the ITU World Championship Series 2009 was each limited to 65 women and men and at the final event there were then 75 decisive for participation are the international ranking points. Per nation and gender are allowed to start per race a maximum of six athletes. There were seven races in 2009 over the Olympic distance for men and women and as ending instead of the eighth, the " Grand Final" in Australia.

As part of the World Championship Series 2010 took over the year six races and then in September the final Final ( Grand Final) in Budapest.

U23

On the Olympic Distance (1.5 km swim, 40 km cycling and 10 km running) also race in the U23 category will be held since 2002.

Junior

In parallel of the ITU Triathlon Junior and the Triathlon World Championships held over the distances 750 m swimming, cycling 20.9 km and 5.4 km run held.

Triathlon Long Distance

The ITU organizes since 1994 the official Long Distance Championships. These races are very similar to the Ironman triathlon race, which is organized by the World Triathlon Corporation, but have other spacer lengths ( for comparison see also triathlon distances):

The World Cup over the long distance was first held in 1994 and since then until 2010 17 times. 2010 was the 17th staging of the World Cup on August 1 in Immenstadt. The competition was there over the longer distance - so 4 km swimming, 130 km cycling and 30 km running.

In 2013 had the World Cup in France Belfort weather conditions discharged as duathlon (9.5 km run, 87 km cycling and 20 km running).

2015, the World Cup in Sweden, will be held under the " Vättern Triathlon " in Motala.

From the ITU Duathlon World Championships one is held annually:

  • Short distance (10 km run, 40 km bike ride and 5 km run ); since 1990
  • Long Distance (16,5 km run, 80 km bike ride and 11 km run ); since 1989

2011, the winner was disqualified in the men, the Portuguese Sergio Silva, after the race and suspended for six months.

Long Distance Duathlon

2011 World Cup after twelve years of absence from the ITU again together with the IPA ( International Powerman Association ) was held on September 4, as part of the Powerman Zofingen in Switzerland (10 km running, 150 km cycling and 30 km running).

Winter Triathlon

The ITU organizes the annual World Championships in Winter Triathlon (6 km run, 10 km mountain bike and 8 km cross-country skiing ).

The ITU organizes since 1998 the annual Aquathlon World Championships (2.5 km run, 1 km swim and 2.5 km run ).

Cross - Triathlon

In April 2011, was first staged in a world championship in cross- Triathlon in Spain by the ITU: 1 km swimming, 20 km biking and 6 km cross-country race.

This World Cup now exists in parallel to the existing since 1996 Xterra Championships, which are held annually in the fall in Hawaii.
