Flinders-Group-Nationalpark

The Flinders Group National Park (English: Flinders Group National Park ) is a national park in northeastern Australian state of Queensland. The Flinders Group consists of seven islands in the west of Bathurst Bay. These are Flinders Iceland, Iceland Stanley, Blackwood Iceland, Iceland Maclear, Denham Iceland, Iceland King and Clack Iceland.

Location

It is located 1745 km northwest of Brisbane and 160 kilometers north-west of Cooktown on the east coast of Cape York Peninsula.

In the neighborhood of the National Park Cape Melville, Lama Lama Cliff Iceland, Marpa and Claremont Isles lie.

Landforms

All the islands are made of sandstone and have rocky shores, hills, rock steps and sand dunes. Before the coasts are coral reefs.

Flora and Fauna

The rocks are covered with a good mix of tropical rain forest, grassland and coastal heathland. In the tidal flats can be found mangroves and salt pans. Off the coast there are extensive seagrass beds.

On the islands, nesting many different land and water birds.

History

The Aborigines on the islands and the adjacent Cape Melville National Park call themselves Yiithuwarra (German salt water people ). Its long tradition up to the first contacts with Europeans can be seen in rock drawings.

Access and facilities

The islands are only accessible to ships and boats. Several cruise ships going from Cairns, put a stop to one of the islands.

Tents in the park is prohibited. Basic facilities such as dry toilets, shelters, picnic tables and water tanks are available.
