Repulse Island National Park

The Repulse Islands National Park (English: Repulse Islands National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland. It is located 875 km northwest of Brisbane and about 25 kilometers east of Proserpine.

The group consists of three islands off the Cape Conway, belonging to the Whitsunday Islands and thus also to the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef. They are called Repulse North Iceland, Iceland and South East Repulse Repulse Iceland.

In the environment, the National Park Newry Islands, Lindeman Island and Smith Islands lie; on the mainland of the Conway National Park.

History

The Island in Repulse Bay were discovered in 1770 by Captain Cook. He thought to have found a way to the north of his ship, but had to realize that it was only a closed bay and not a strait. He was so repulsed (English: repulsed ). Therefore he named the bay and located at the southern entrance islands accordingly.

Fauna

On all three islands nesting waterfowl. In the breeding season, so access to the islands is limited.

Facilities

Wild camping is permitted provided that the breeding birds are not disturbed. Partial toilets and picnic tables are available. Open fires are prohibited in the park.

The islands are accessible only by private boat.
