Mount-Jim-Crow-Nationalpark

The Mount Jim Crow National Park (English: Mount Jim Crow National Park ) is a national park in the eastern part of the Australian state of Queensland. It is located 531 km north-west of Brisbane and 29 kilometers north-east of Rockhampton.

History

Dreamtime

For the Aborigines of the area, the Darumbal, the mountain always had a special meaning: A Dreamtime legend says that once a boy and a girl in love and wanted to marry. However, since they belonged to the same totem, the tribal elders had no objection to something. The young people but did not care, ran away and hid themselves in a flat bush land in what is now Mount Jim Crow. The Rainbow Serpent, who (southeast of Mount Jim Crow ) was sitting on the Mount Wheeler, saw the dilemma and decided to intervene. She pushed with all his strength between the two lovers and pushed soil and trees up until finally the Mount Jim Crow arose and the lovers are separated. Scared of such violence, the two decided in future to adhere to the tribal rules.

After the arrival of Europeans

The mountain served initially as a quarry. During World War II took advantage of the U.S. Army it as a storage space for supplies.

State Nature and Geology

The park surrounds the 221 -meter Mount Jim Crow, the trachyte lava of an extinct 70 million years ago the volcano. Erosion had the upper outer parts of the volcano weather, so that only the cooled lava is visible. Mount Jim Crow belongs to a series of 12 volcanoes in the area, called Mount Hedlow Volcanoes.

Flora and Fauna

There is dry rainforest on the mountain slopes. At the top grow Guinea - Araucaria. The southwestern border of the park is the Hedlow Creek. This stream has many water holes, which are covered with water lilies.

At dusk you can there noise leather heads, Panther birds Allfarbloris and gold ear - honey -eater ( Meliphaga Lewinii ) watch.

Facilities and access

The tents are allowed in the park. Nor is there any picnic areas or of hiking trails.

The Mount Jim Crow National Park can be reached on the connecting road Rockhampton - Yeppoon. It is located about halfway north of the road.
