History

The Endeavour under the command of Lieutenant James Cook was on 11 June 1770 on the now called Endeavour Reef, located off Cape Tribulation. The ship in danger of sinking, the crew escaped to the mainland and only a day later could be drawn it for repair to the banks of the river. This river called the Native Wabalumbaal. The river was later named after the name of the ship Endeavour River. The national park in turn was named after the river.

As the ship repair lasted until August 4, the naturalist Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander collected many specimens of the " Australian " Flora of the area, which they took to the Royal Botanic Gardens in England. Sydney Parkinson illustrated first Australian Aborigines, who were found in the vicinity, and in addition the collected plants and animals that were discovered. Kangaroos were then given its English name ( Kangaroo ), which was borrowed from the language of the local Aborigines, the Guugu Yimithirr.
