Great-Sandy-Nationalpark

The Great Sandy National Park ( engl. Great Sandy National Park ) is a 2210 square kilometer national park located in the Australian state of Queensland. It is located 200 to 300 kilometers north of Brisbane, between the towns of Noosa Heads and Hervey Bay.

The National Park comprises two separate parts: one part, practically the whole island Fraser Iceland as well as a section called Cooloola coastline on the southern mainland.

  • Fraser Iceland is known as the largest sand island in the world. The 100 -kilometer-long island east of Hervey Bay was formed from information gathered by water and wind sand masses. It is characterized by dunes, colored cliffs, forests and 40 freshwater lakes. More than 600 plant and 300 vertebrate species find a livelihood here. 1992 Fraser Iceland was listed by UNESCO as a natural monument in the list of world cultural heritage. → Main article: Fraser Iceland
  • The Cooloola section lies between the coastal towns of Rainbow Beach to the north and Noosa Heads on the Sunshine Coast east of Gympie. The sand dunes and surrounded floors salt and freshwater lakes, crossed by rivers and covered by mangroves, rain forests and forests with eucalyptus and banksia. The beaches are about 60 miles long. The area is 566 square kilometers in size. There are hiking trails, several campsites, some of which are only accessible by canoe and routes for off-road vehicles, which may be driven on the beaches.
