Daintree-Nationalpark

The Daintree National Park (English Daintree National Park ) in Queensland, Australia firstly includes a 170 -square-mile area between the rivers Daintree and Bloomfield, on the other one around 565 square kilometer area northwest of the town of Mossman.

Location

The park is located approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Cairns. With 1,375 m Thornton Peak is the highest mountain in the park; a popular day hike leads to the 770 m high Mt Sorrow, at the foot of the small settlement of Cape Tribulation is located.

To the west is directly connected to the National Park Mount Lewis, Mount Spurgeon and Mount Windsor. In the north of Cedar Bay and the Annan River National Park lie.

Flora and Fauna

At only 0.01 per cent of Australia 's land area live more than 30 percent of all mammals species, 65 percent of Australia's bat and butterfly species and 20 percent of bird species. From the tall trees of the coast with its vines, the riverine mangrove forests to the small-leafed vegetation of the mountains 13 different rain forest types can be distinguished. 70 animal and 700 plant species are endemic here.

History

1983, the controversial Bloomfield Track between Cape Tribulation and the Bloomfield River through the coastal rainforest was created and called international attention to the rescue indicate which finally culminated with Baublockaden in a local campaign by activists. Although conservationists lost the battle for the streets, ultimately, this led at the federal level to a rethinking of the hitherto practiced toleration of commercial logging operations.

As part of the 450- kilometer stretch of coastline Wet Tropics of Queensland between Townsville and Cooktown is one of the Park since 1988 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. More than 75 percent of the 1200 km ² large area consist of tropical rain forest and are considered exceptional example of ecological evolution and biological diversity.

A native of Scotland explorer George Dalrymple (1826-1876) named the National Park to the Australian geologist and photographer Richard Daintree ( 1832-1878 ).
