Green-Island-Nationalpark

The Green- Iceland National Park (English: Green Iceland National Park ) is a national park in northeastern Australian state of Queensland.

Location

It is located 1394 km northwest of Brisbane and 27 kilometers off the coast of Cairns.

In the neighborhood of the National Park Michaelmas and Upolu Cays and Fitzroy Iceland lie.

History

The local Aboriginesstamm the Gungganyji use the island as a place for initiation rites. For over 100 years it has been popular as a tourist destination. In 1937, she was declared a National Park. 1974, a marine park was built around the island and since 1981 it has been part of the World Heritage Great Barrier Reef.

Provincial nature

Green Iceland is a 7.93 -acre coral island on the Great Barrier Reef, which has built up over thousands of years on the side facing away from the flow of a platform reef from the deposition of dead coral. It is one of the most visited in this World Heritage Site.

Flora and Fauna

The island is covered with tropical rainforest. Especially many bird and insect species can be found there. To the island on the reef, there are many corals, clams, fish, stingrays and other sea creatures. Green turtles and hawksbill turtles can be seen from the beaches of the island. Facilities

The camping is not permitted on the island. However, a small luxury resort has been built, which is approached daily by ferries. On the island there is a 1.3 km long, paved trail, several picnic areas, restrooms and telephones.
