Mount Cook National Park, Australia

Mount Cook National Park (English Mount Cook National Park ) is about a 5 square kilometer national park in Queensland, Australia.

Location

The park is located in the region of Far North Queensland. It is located about 180 kilometers north of Cairns and 3 kilometers south of Cooktown. Located on the Coral Sea between the Mulligan Highway and the coast, the National Park protects the area around the 431 -meter-high Mount Cook. Apart from the 6 km long hiking trail to the summit, there are no visitor facilities or roads in the park.

History

Lieutenant Phillip Parker King named Mount Cook in June 1819 during his circumnavigation of northern Australia. Not Knowing that already Lieutenant James Cook had named the mountain in 1770 Gore's Mount, by John Gore, his third lieutenant. The name Gore's Mount has been forgotten over time.

Flora and Fauna

Rain forest and tropical forest with a heath substructure dominate both on the higher slopes and along streams and rivers. Grassland growing on the southern slopes.

The different habitats are home to a variety of different plants and animals, including the Guinea - Amethystine (Morelia amethistina ) and classified as endangered Northern Quoll ( Dasyurus hallucatus ). In the summer months you can two-color fruit pigeons ( Ducula bicolour ) and Paradise Lieste ( Tanysiptera sylvia ), a Eisvogelart observe.
