Newry-Islands-Nationalpark

The Newry Islands National Park (English: Newry Islands National Park ) is a national park in the eastern part of the Australian state of Queensland. It is located 847 km north-west of Brisbane and 45 kilometers north- west of Mackay.

The National Park includes eight islands. In addition to the main island of Iceland Newry these are Rabbit Iceland, Outer Newry Iceland, Iceland Acacia, Mausoleum Iceland, North Iceland Red Cliff, Red Cliff South Iceland and Rocky Iceland. All the islands are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Great Barrier Reef.

In the environment, the National Parks Smith Island, Repulse Islands and Brampton Islands lie.

History

In Newry Iceland there was one of the first holiday resorts on the islands in the area. It was from the early 1920s until 2001.

Provincial nature

The small islands are covered by open woodland and dense tropical rain forest, near the coast there are pearl white sandy beaches and rocky headlands.

Facilities

There are a number scale tent sites for which reservations are required, however. Picnic areas are on Newry Iceland, Outer Newry and Rabbit Iceland Iceland. They are equipped with toilets, picnic tables and shelters. In Iceland and Outer Newry Newry Iceland open fires are prohibited.

The islands are accessible only by private boat. A slipway is located at Seaforth.
