Orpheus-Island-Nationalpark

The Orpheus Iceland National Park (English: Orpheus Iceland National Park ) is a national park in northeastern Australian state of Queensland. It is located 1189 km northwest of Brisbane and 45 kilometers east of Ingham.

Pelorus Iceland is 800 meters north of Orpheus Iceland. Also belongs to the National Park of the albino rock 2.6 km west of Great Palm Iceland. The National Park islands belonging are part of the Local Government Area Hinchinbrook Shire. At the 2006 census, 21 residents were counted on Orpheus Iceland, 7 men and 14 women, no families.

In the neighborhood of the National Park Hinchinbrook Iceland, Halifax Bay Wetlands and Paluma Range lie.

Origin of the name

The local Aboriginal people call the island Goolboddi Iceland. The name ' Orpheus Iceland ' won the island in 1887 by Lieutenant GE Richards, to remind you of the 1863 sunk off Auckland HMS Orpheus.

Provincial nature

Orpheus Iceland was formed million years ago, 280 of magma, which penetrated into the columns of granite rock base. It originated typical annular Dykes, which spread in cobweb mold. Located on the continental shelf of the island is about 12 km long. Its width varies between 1 and 2.5 kilometers. It offers rocky headlands and sandy beaches and is surrounded by coral reefs.

Flora and Fauna

The island is mostly covered with sparse eucalyptus and acacia forest. Tropical Rainforest grows in sheltered valleys and coves. There you will find fig trees and the typical Macarangabäume with their heart-shaped leaves. Occasionally one also applies to small strip of grass land.

Many mammals and reptiles live on Orpheus Iceland, as well as water and land birds. Example of the water birds are ospreys and herons, for the land birds the Reinwardt chicken.

Facilities and access

The camping is permitted in Yanks Jetty, South Beach and Pioneer Bay. In Yanks Jetty and Pioneer Bay, there are toilets, in addition Yanks Jetty gas grills. On the island there is a research station of the James Cook University and an exclusive holiday resort. Roads and landscaped trails there is not.

The island is accessible by private or charter boats.
