Bowling-Green-Bay-Nationalpark

The Bowling Green Bay National Park (English: Bowling Green Bay National Park ) is a national park in the eastern part of the Australian state of Queensland.

In the park many different habitats are protected, inter alia, also the wild, wooded area around the Mount Elliot and Saddle Mountain and the estuaries on the coast between the Cape Cleveland and the Cape Bowling Green. The park is protected under the Ramsar Convention.

Location

It is located 1100 km northwest of Brisbane, 28 kilometers south of Townsville and 59 kilometers north of Ayr.

Landforms

The peak of Mount Elliot is 1,342 meters high. On its eastern side there are many streams, of which the Alligator Creek is the most significant. The creek is a popular swimming spot. Bird watchers see the birds while drinking creek water and when feeding the riparian vegetation.

The park is also the flood plain of the Haughton River with one of the largest wetlands on the east coast of Australia was formed by the deposition of alluvial material from the coastal rivers in the calm waters of Bowling Green Bay and consists of tidal flats, salt marshes, individual hills and mangrove forests. Behind the overgrown with mangrove forests are pure salt flats. These vast plains are characteristic of wetlands in northern Queensland, where comparatively low rainfall, and a short rainy season are not able to flush the salt.

Fauna

The Brolgakranich and Spaltfußgans find their habitat in the bins swamps of Bowling Green Bay. In addition, the park is the best place to watch the rare Cistensänger. Other bird species there are the Pfeifgans, the eyebrow duck, spoonbill, the Ibis and the Jabiru. Crocodiles are found in the estuaries and wetlands.

Facilities

Camping in the park is allowed on the campground at Alligator Creek. Wild camping is allowed at Cape Bowling Green. Open fire and pets, however, are prohibited in the park.
