Marco van Basten

Marcel "Marco" van Basten ( born October 31, 1964 in Utrecht ) is a former Dutch footballer and former coach of the Netherlands. He is considered one of the best strikers of his generation.

Life

Marcel van Basten came on 31 October 1964 as the youngest of three children of former football player Joop van Basten and his wife Leny at the Surinamestraat to the world. Since his mother's grandmother had difficulty with the name " Marcel ", she called him unceremoniously "Marco".

He attended St. Dominic Elementary School and later the general Niels Stensen secondary college in Utrecht. In his youth, he played alongside football even table tennis.

Playing career

In the club

Ajax Amsterdam

He first played at UVV Utrecht ( 1970-80 ) and Elinkwijk Utrecht (1981 /82) until he moved in 1982 to Ajax Amsterdam. His debut in the first team was van Basten in April 1982, when he also scored his first goal in the same jersey the Red -Whites in a 5-0 win against NEC Nijmegen. In this game, he came off the bench for Holland legend Johan Cruyff.

In the 1982/83 season he was still in the shadow of Wim Kieft. But this was sold to the Italian Serie A representative Pisa Calcio in the following year. In the years 1984, 1985, 1986 and 1987, van Basten was top scorer in the Dutch league and has become one of the top strikers in the 1980s. In 1986 he became even Europe scorer. This season, get him 37 goals in 26 games. 1987 was van Basten in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup. In the match against 1.FC Lok Leipzig he scored the decisive goal.

AC Milan

After this title, he moved to AC Milan, where he made the time probably best trio in Europe along with his fellow countrymen Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard. With van Basten, AC Milan won the 1989 and 1990 European Champion Clubs' Cup. Late in his career he had to stop again and again due to a serious ankle injury. His last competitive game for AC Milan van Basten played in the final of the Champions League against Olympique Marseille on May 26, 1993.

Because of his ankle injury and knee problems, he then had to stop again, but could not play as a professional football player and eventually joined back in 1995 as a sports invalid despite intensive efforts.

In the National Team

Van Basten completed for the Dutch national football team between September 1983 and October 1992 58 caps (24 goals) and won with the team the European Football Championship 1988, where he was top scorer with five goals. He succeeded with the 2-0 against the USSR during the finale, one of the most spectacular goals of all time. From spitzestem angle he was lifted up while Rinat Dassajew, one of the at that time best goalies in the world. Among the spectators of sports show was voted Goal of the Month of June.

Coaching career

His work as a trainer began Marco van Basten for the season 2003/ 04 at the youth team of Ajax Amsterdam.

Netherlands national team

As of July 29, 2004 van Basten was coach of the Dutch national team ( Bondscoach ). Assistant coach was John van ' t Schip, who has worked with van Basten at Ajax Amsterdam.

With van Basten came a break in the national team. Players like Clarence Seedorf, Patrick Kluivert, Edgar Davids, Roy Makaay and Mark van Bommel were not nominated. For a long time, the three major Dutch teams ( Ajax Amsterdam, Feyenoord, PSV Eindhoven ) the skeleton of the Oranje. But van Basten gave young players like Denny Landzaat, Barry Opdam, Barry van Galen, Ron Vlaar Jan Kromkamp and Joris Mathijsen from newcomer AZ Alkmaar the opportunity to prove themselves. Ajax Amsterdam

At the beginning of the 2008/ 09 van Basten became coach of Ajax Amsterdam as the successor to interim coach Adrie Koster. On 22 February 2008, he signed a four year contract. On 6 May 2009 he resigned due to lack of success. He was replaced by Martin Jol.

SC Heerenveen

For the 2012/13 season van Basten took over from Ron Jans as coach of the Dutch first division club SC Heerenveen. He signed a contract for two years.
