Bitburg-Prüm

The district of Bitburg -Prüm ( until 31 December 2006 the district Bitburg -Prüm ) is measured on its surface the biggest and the most sparsely populated district of Rhineland -Palatinate and is located in the extreme west of the country. To the north it borders with only about 1.5 km length of the North Rhine- Westphalian district of Euskirchen, in the northeast of the county Vulkan Eifel, in the southeast of the district Bernkastel- Wittlich, in the south by the district of Trier -Saar castle, on the west by the Echternach Luxembourg cantons, Diekirch, Vianden and Clervaux and to the northwest by the Belgian province of Liège.

Geography

The district of Bitburg -Prüm includes the southern part of the central mountain range Eifel with the Schneifel and its highest mountain, the Black Man ( 698 m). In the West, the Islek, in the east the limestone and Waldeifel and to the south the Bitburger Gutland ( Bekef ) is the Ferschweiler plateau. Smaller rivers, such as Kyll, Nims and Prüm run through the county territory. Our and Sauer ( a tributary of the Moselle ) form the border with the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

History

Today the district of Bitburg -Prüm was fragmented end of the 18th century in many territories. 1798, under French administration, was established as part of the Saar district departments of the Prüm. In 1815, it came under Prussian administration and 1816 the two districts of Bitburg and Prüm in the Trier region. After the First World War, the area was temporarily occupied by the French again. In the district there are today, especially in the Schneifel important remains of the former West Wall. Since 1946, the area is part of the newly founded state of Rhineland- Palatinate.

In the district reform in 1970, the district Bitburg was combined with the substantial part of the district of Prüm and parts of counties Wittlich and Trier to the district Bitburg- Prüm. The district of Bitburg -Prüm was eventually renamed on 1 January 2007 in " the district of Bitburg -Prüm ," which, it was hoped, among other tourist benefits.

District partnerships

Since 1990, the Eifel circuit maintains with the South Thuringia district Sonneberg a county partnership. Within this circle he helped his partner after reunification build the district administration.

Traffic

Road

By the district leads the federal motorway 60 Wittlich- Liege ( Belgium). In addition, several federal, state and county roads run through the county area, including the B 51, ​​B 257, B 265 and B 410

Rail

The Eifel track that runs between Cologne and Trier, runs through the county. This railway had here several branch lines, but they were now largely abandoned and partially dismantled.
