John Garamendi

John Raymond Garamendi ( born January 24, 1945 in Camp Blanding, Clay County, Florida) is an American politician. From 2007 to 2009 he was vice- governor of California; since he represents this state in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Garamendi grew up in Mokelumne Hill (California ) and later studied at the University of California at Berkeley. During this time he was also football player and wrestler. This is followed by a study completed at Harvard University. In the following years, Garamendi was a private businessman and rancher. Between 1966 and 1968 he worked for the Peace Corps in Ethiopia. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party. In the years 1974 to 1976 he sat as a deputy in the California State Assembly; 1976 to 1990 he was a member of the State Senate.

From 1991 to 1994, and again in the years 2002 to 2006, Garamendi was the California State Insurance Commissioner government. From 1995 to 1998 he was Deputy Secretary of the Interior ( Deputy Secretary of the Interior ). In November 2006 he was nominated by the Democratic Party as a candidate for the office of Lieutenant Governor of California and won against Republican Tom McClintock. He was on 8 January 2007 Deputy simultaneously confirmed in the Official Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Following the resignation of Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher Garamendi was at the due election for the seat tenth of California as their successors in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he took up his new mandate on November 3, 2009. From the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, he resigned, prompting Governor Schwarzenegger Republican Abel Maldonado appointed with the approval of the State Legislature as the new deputy governor.

Since he was confirmed in 2010 with 58.9 % of the vote, he can exercise his mandate in Congress today. He is a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Natural Resources, and in four sub-committees. He also serves on the International Conservation Caucus. After another re-election in 2012, he represents since January 3, 2013 the third election district of his state.

John Garamendi is married and has six children. He lives privately with his family in Walnut Grove.
