Lawrence E. McGann

Lawrence Edward McGann ( born February 2, 1852 in Galway, Ireland, † July 22, 1928 in Oak Park, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1855 Lawrence McGann came from his Irish home with his mother to Milford in Massachusetts, where he attended the public schools. In 1865 the family moved to Chicago. Until 1879 McGann worked in the shoe trade. After that, he was employed until 1885 when the city administration. Between 1885 and 1891 he was commissioner his hometown for the road sector. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1890 McGann was in the second electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Frank Lawler on March 4, 1891. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1895 two legislative sessions. Since 1893 he was Chairman of the Working Committee. In the elections of 1894 McGann was re-elected in the third district. Accordingly, he entered on March 4, 1895 on another term in the House of Representatives. His opponent Hugh R. Belknap put but against the Wahlausgabng protest. When this was granted, McGann had to cede his position to Belknap on December 27, 1895.

In 1896 and 1897 he was president of the urban Railway Company of Chicago. From 1898 to 1901 he acted in this city as commissioner of public works. This office he held from 1911-1915 again. From 1901 to 1907 he was city auditor (controller). Lawrence McGann died on July 22, 1928 in Oak Park, and is buried in Chicago.
