John C. Sherwin

John Crocker Sherwin ( born February 8, 1838 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence County, New York, † January 1, 1904 in Benton Harbor, Michigan ) was an American politician. Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Sherwin attended the public schools of his home and then the Lombard College in Galesburg ( Illinois). After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. In the meantime, he worked as county clerk in Kane County and the City of Aurora as a lawyer. During the Civil War he served in an infantry unit from Illinois in the army of the Union.

Politically, Sherwin was a member of the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1878 he was in the fourth electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William Lathrop on March 4, 1879. After a re-election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1883 two legislative sessions. In 1882 he gave up another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Sherwin practiced as a lawyer again. He died on 1 January 1904 in Benton Harbor and was buried in Aurora.
