Harold R. Collier

Harold Reginald Collier ( born December 12, 1915 in Lansing, Michigan, † 17 January 2006 in West Palm Beach, Florida ) was an American politician. Between 1957 and 1975 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Harold Collier attended the public schools of his home. In 1932 he graduated from the J. Sterling Morton High School; in the years 1932 and 1933 he studied at Morton Junior College in Cicero (Illinois ). Between 1934 and 1937 he graduated from Lake Forest College. After that, he worked for some time in the newspaper industry. Between 1938 and 1941 he was employed by the publisher, who published Life Magazine. From 1941 to 1951 he was sales and personnel manager of the company match Corp.. of America in Chicago. Subsequently, he served from 1952 to 1956 as a department director for advertising and public relations at the company McAlear Manufacturing Co. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In 1952 he applied unsuccessfully for his party's nomination for election to the Secretary of State of Illinois. Instead, he was from 1953 to 1956 mayor of the municipality of Berwyn. He headed in that time the local health committee. Within his party he held until 1974, some regional offices.

In the congressional elections of 1956, Collier was the tenth electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Richard W. Hoffman on January 3, 1957. After eight re- election he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1975 nine legislative sessions. Since 1973 he represented there as a successor to the late George W. Collins meantime the sixth district of his state. Collier was a longstanding member of the Committee on Ways and Means. During his time in Congress were, among others, the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement and the Watergate scandal.

1974 renounced Harold Collier on another candidacy. After he retired from politics. He died on 17 January 2006 in West Palm Beach.
