William T. Murphy

William Thomas Murphy ( born August 7, 1899 in Chicago, Illinois, † January 29, 1978 in Oak Lawn, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1959 and 1971 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

William Murphy attended Yale and Harvard Elementary Schools, and then completed the Calumet High School in Chicago. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. After studying law at the Law School of Loyola University and his 1926 was admitted to the bar he began in 1927 to work in Chicago in this profession. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1935 and 1959 he was a member of the City Council of Chicago. From 1947 to 1959 he was also a member of the local Municipal Planning Commission. Between 1944 and 1956 he participated as a delegate to all Democratic National Conventions.

In the congressional elections of 1958, Murphy was the third electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Emmet Byrne on January 3, 1959. After five re- elections, he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1971 six legislative periods. These were determined by the events of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War.

In 1970, William Murphy gave up another candidacy. He died on January 29, 1978 in Oak Lawn.
